Overview

Join SOWEGA Rising’s Institute for Organizing, 2023 Rise Fellowship. A transformational journey designed to empower individuals to become effective change-makers within their communities. This fellowship provides a comprehensive learning experience on community organizing, leadership, and advocacy.

Our virtual fellowship is an immersive, hands-on experience, facilitated by leading local experts within the community organizing sphere. Through a series of interactive webinars, Rise Fellows will become well-versed in key areas such as identifying community issues, strategic planning, leadership values, community engagement, partnership building, and project success measurement. Our Rise Fellows will become adept at addressing significant community problems, creating measurable impacts, and engaging communities for collective action.

Virtual Sessions

Dates: August 22 – September 28

Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:30 PM ET; including 3 hours a week of group work

The Fellowship demands substantial dedication of time and effort. As such, we encourage applicants to carefully consider their current work, academic, and personal obligations to ensure they can fully commit to the required attendance of all sessions and actively participate in the essential group tasks.

Who Should Apply

The fellowship invites applications from individuals who are passionate about community service and social change. Those who believe in SOWEGA Rising’s mission. Whether you’re a student, professional, homemaker, retiree, or just someone driven to make a difference, this program is for you. Prior experience in leadership or community service is welcomed but not a prerequisite. We value diversity in experiences and perspectives.

FAQs

Once registered and confirmed, you will receive a status on your application by August 15. To maintain a quality experience, we will have limit of participants accepted for this fellowship.

No. There is no fee to register or participate in the fellowship.

We will be using Zoom, video conferencing software and some other collaboration tools.

We are dedicated to supporting all of our trainees in their learning. If you need an accommodation or additional support of any kind, please email training@sowegarising.org.

Requests for support can include, but are not limited to: access to materials, different colored hand outs, an alternative method for completing quizzes, requesting facilitators speak more clearly or use captions.

Yes! Presentations, worksheets, and other materials will always be made available.

We understand that life happens. In case of a work or family emergency that cannot be rescheduled, fellows may miss up to two scheduled sessions. Make-up work will be required.

Expectations

This fellowship is designed to be fun! But it also involves a highly immersive and demanding experience, with a strong emphasis on active engagement. The structure and content of the course demand an good level of participation from all attendees.

During lecture sessions:

We encourage every participant to be an active contributor to the learning journey. This includes writing your thoughts and questions in the chat box, sharing your insights verbally during discussions, and fully participating in breakout group discussions. These interactions are crucial for not only your experience but the collective.

Outside of scheduled class time, participants will be expected to:

  • Apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the sessions to their real-time situations. This practical application will reinforce the theoretical concepts taught and allow participants to experience their practical implications.
  • Engage with mandatory reading materials. These readings are critical to understanding the course content and will supplement the knowledge gained during the sessions.
  • Collaborate on group projects with a small team of fellow participants. These projects provide an opportunity for peer learning and for applying the knowledge gained in a group dynamic.

Please note that capacity for this course is limited. The high level of engagement and commitment required means that it may not be suitable for everyone. This ensures that those who are ready and able to fully commit to the course can do so and reap the full benefits it has to offer.
